Details | I arrived around 1 and was in awe of the shoreline with many 20 foot logs casually floating past in the large shore dump even though high tide had passed. I did not jump to suit up and pump up. I hung around and took some photos and then launched Mark and John. I was close to taking a pass but I decided to hang around, hoping it would calm down. Well it did, a bit. I eventually plucked up the courage, so I suited up and pumped up. I made my way to the shoreline and paused for a while looking for an entry while the kite tugged hard in the gusts, so much so that I took a knee to handle it. My entry did not go very well. I was properly separated from my board a couple of times, having to go to shore to fetch it, and I was pushed way downwind chasing the board. My second entry failure was when I thought I had finally made it past the churn. I had just got up and riding when a really big peak wave formed right in front of me. Being doggedly determined to "just get out and past it all", I went straight for the peak. I made it over the peak but my board did not. I then had to chase my board all the way back to shore. Very humbling. I finally got out and felt kind of deflated by the struggle. So I focused on getting back upwind to the launch spot and then I decided to just come in. I was beaten but not defeated. On shore, I landed John and Mark. I debriefed with Mark and told him about my tribulations with the shore dump. I got some really good advice from Mark. The best advice was "don't charge the peaks", just turn and renegotiate getting over the wave. I hope to keep this in mind the next time I am at the edge of my abilities in winter weather. I am lucky to have good mates to kite with. [from Session Log on Friday November 22, 2024] |
