Nitinaht update!

Just arrived at Nitinaht Lake, and thought I should pass on some
news. First, the office / store / gas station is closed, and will
remain so for the forseeable future. Apparently it has been a
money losing venture and Judy has packed it in, and no one else
has stepped up to run it.

Second, the campsite fee is now $15 per night, and the fee is
collected by Pat (new guy) at your campsite. The campsites
have Provincial Park - like number posts at each site. On the
plus side, there is now a dumpster bin across the road from the
Motel for garbage. The Motel appears to be neglected, with
window screens scattered about and the shower doors locked.
The laundry room is open but at least one machine is out
of order.

Third, the only water tap I could find operating was on the south
wall of the store - too close to the ground to fill a water
container. Bring a wrench - the handle is gone.

Fourth, there is an unsecured wifi hot spot just a few
meters off the gas pumps, towards the Ditidaht Police
station.

Fifth, the beach has a few new upended stumps with
roots in the kiting area - will be a hazard. Otherwise
the weather looks great for tomorrow (Friday) and fair
for the rest of the weekend. Winds in the 10 - 18 knot
range are likely.

Finally, the road in is mostly graded and in fair condition
(Nitinaht standards). The season has started!

Bummer about the store. I wonder when the campsite will go agro like all the other ones and only allow you to tent at numbered spots locking the gate when its full.. that sure would be a sad day.

Always best to bring in all your own drinking water and pack out all your garbage. Ya $15 is too much.

If you go to the Ministry's site for Forestry campsites it clearly states that the nightly fee is $10.00 per night through 2012. Is the campsite no longer a Forestry Campsite, is the Ministry's site wrong, or are you being asked to pay too much?

That was me on the red Naish. Had a great day Friday. Tons of wind and nobody on the lake.

The fact the store is closed doesn't bother me as I go camping with everything I need in my truck.

I also don't mind the $15 camping fee. Compared to all the places I've travelled Nitnaht is still so much fun and so nice $15/campsite is a small price to pay - especially if there are 3-5 people sharing it.

I'm looking forward to another great summer... :D

Its a lot compared to the $10 a night camping with free hot showers at Oregon venues.

Are you planning on kiting at Nitnaht a bunch this summer? If so there are lots of regulars you can team up with for a campsite to cut your costs. You'll make some friends that kite and can save money on the gas to get there as well.

No offence to OR, but I'd be living there if I thought it was that amazing. Having spent a lot of time in the western US I'll take Van Isle and $15 campsites every time. I'm happy to visit WA, OR and CA, but I am also very happy to come home.

After 4 weeks at La Ventana 4 kiters and 2 WSers seems like you are riding alone. And heck LV isn't really crowded.

It was a super fun day on the water... :D

3 Questions about Nitinat:

1: Are we still allowed to camp on the beach? (yes still paying the $15 per night)

2: Is there still parking area for people to camp on the beach?

3: Is the Sauna re built? Are they going to allowed it like previous years?
Any help needed?

Tks for any info, Ian
