windsurf maya riviera

Post by tempy »

The family is headed to the Maya Riviera in Feb 2012 for conference and vacation. My google search is pretty lean for windsurf rentals, although there are lots of kiting resources. Anyone have any windsurf tips ( including rentals for the area)? Thanks

6 months of living on the riviera and I only saw 2 windsurfers the whole time...
There is a school up in Cancun where you can do lessons... don't know about rentals. But honestly it is unlikely you will have enough wind to windsurf.
It was mostly straight onshore and light. You will be lucky to get a 20kn day.
Trying some kiting lessons up at Isla Blanca will be the best bet to get on the water.

When I worked at Cerros Maya on Chetumal Bay, northern Belize, as an archaeologist/boatman and a sailing instructor through the winter/spring of 1975, it blew virtually every afternoon. At the time I thought it was over 20 knots or so (Bft 5) but maybe it was only 15. It was stronger than the surrounding area, perhaps venturi'ed by the bay. I'm sure it would have been plenty to windsurf, but I doubt you'd find any WS gear to rent there.
