Race Rock Area?

Post by Teabag »

Red circle on the map -> Years after years I look at the Race Rock station being 20-25-30 kts when there is nothing everywhere else. I went to the Military Base hoping to enter, drive and walk towards the water to hopefully find a launch spot but even if I am military I couldn’t get in (it’s an ammunition depot and security is very strict).

Blue circle -> I was wondering if anyone ever drove around the Becher bay area, would the westerly reach there or it is too much north from Race Rock? The wind might be extremely gusty has well since it would go through land first. I am just wondering if that area has been "explored" by you guys that windsurf/kitesurf since the last 10+ years, or it has never been?

Green circle -> Also would there be wind and launching spot somewhere on the coast in East Sook regional Park? Anyone ever explored this area?

If it has been checked out and nothing came up I won’t lose time trying to find a spot there but if nobody has ever tried I might spend some time searching for it, or at least drive there when Race Rock is on to see if the wind reach there to.

Tks for sharing any info you know about these areas,
Ian

if you are considering East Sooke .....I have been there plenty .....and on days when it is windy there.....I have heard about a very cool place I don't think you have ever tried, Ian. It's called Gordon's Beach. Schhhh, secret spot. Especially great for that funny sport with the parasail thingie and waterski like boogie boards :!: It's about 5 minutes further or less if you count the hike to the unfriendly east sooke park coastline 8)

See ya out there, dood  Maybe we can witness a G spot downwinder with Crabber doing the recon in his new cigar boat

Let’s have a look at Gordos station vs Race Rock for tonight from 17h00 till 22h00 .....

Gordo= 9kts, 13 kts, 5 kts, 0 kts, 0 kts and 0 kts ......
Race Rock: 22kts, 22kts,24kts,25kts,23kts

but Sheringham Point: 14 kts, 20 kts, 19 kts, 17 kts, 16 kts...

This happens lots in the past, will happen lots in the future as well
East Sooke is half way between Gordo and Race Rock, maybe there is potential... Or Becher Bay to...

The 5 or 10 minutes walk might be worth at East sooke, but probably not. If it hasn’t been “explored” in the past might as well checking it out sometimes. Maybe we have been missing out on a very good spot all these years (but once again, probably not, especially because of the unfriendly East Sooke Coastline).

Have you been to East Sooke plenty of times looking for a spot Kus or you were being sarcastic? (when Gordo is dead but Race Rock 20+ kts)

I have tried Gordo and do like it by the way, but cook st is way closer this is why I go cook st more often.

It often happens that Race Rock is 20/25/30kts while Gordo/Shringham/Cook are 5 and 10 kts. It’s during these days that finding a spot at East Sooke Reg Park or Becher Bay area would pay off, obviously if there is one.

Just asking info on these 2 area before I lose times exploring. But then again it won’t be that long checking it out which is what I am going to do, unless someone has already done it in the past and didnt find nothing.

Cattle Point is also unfriendly for launching a kite, especially a foil but we still go... (safety release rdy while launching on the rock)

nope, I have seen the wind along East Sooke when Gordos is dead...but it ain't as you state and you can see the windline way out in the Strait.....and the ESP coastline is NOT kite or windsurf friendly. The Sheringham bubble is a well known thing on lighter days and lateron in the season when the fog rolls in....Yes Race gets the wind, it is right at the main stream of the strait, might only have a wind line a few hundred feet wide tho, who really knows and how it shifts around. Maybe AC :?: The question really is, would it be worth it? If there is no wind anywhere else, the waves will be non-existent, u'll be looking over the shoulder the whole time wondering if it'll shut off on ya and you get to see Seattle in 3 days, the current might be an interesting issue near Race and the points too  I know it is at Otter Point  Keep looking but I think you can safely skip E part of ESpark in favor of G. Check Becher Bay rd?

In 1986 I tried a spot I'd observed while heading to Pachena Bay ... As far as I know it hadn't been windsurfed before but you might have heard of it since: Nitinaht lake !!! Keep looking for those new spots !!! http://www.bigwavedave.ca/wiki/index.php/Taylor_Beach is the nearest to Race that I have tried ... It's very fickle in N. winds but would (perhaps) be fun in S. wind 8)

Only way to do this would be by boat or Jetski I think. Peole do that other venues. No worries about swimming in then.
