Brazil Kiteboarding

Post by gboater »

I am headed down to Brazil this November. Looking for advice for spots to hit and accommodation, preferably on the cheaper side. So far I am thinking of spending time in Cumbuco and Jericoacoara. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

We spent 3-4 weeks kiting in Brazil a couple of years ago. Cumbuco is a good place to get your bearings, meet some people (find rides?) & do a little kiting. However, the kiting there isn't nearly as good as it is elsewhere along the coast (north and south).

Jeri is fun, lots to see and do. However, the kiting there is mostly 4-6m. No joke. It’s a popular windsurfing spot, but not a lot of kiting actually happens there. There is a spot just south of Jeri (maybe 20-30 min?) called Prea where locals take their students, and some kiters setup base. Wind is about 10 knots less there. However, it’s far from town and doesn't have many restaurants, hotels etc. Go check it out, but I think there is better kiting to be had.

Spots I do think are worth going to include: Paracuru, Taiba, Mundau, Illha do Guajiru, and my favourite: Icaraí de Amontada. Kite spots are endless in Brazil. Check out http://locations.splocs.com/ for all the beaches. Some spots are better for flat water, some for waves - some private, some crazy crowded. Its all there.

If there is any way you can rent a car – do it. Or, try to find somewhere you can rent a buggy with other kiters for a day here and there. Buggies can go on the beach cars cannot, but we still got to lots of great spots in our car!

This time of year, you can kite there every day, in any conditions you want. You just need to be able to get there. I don’t have a lot of recommendations on saving money in Brazil, we spent 30-50 a night on accommodation (for 2) plus $25 a day for our car). It wasn’t a cheap trip – but we had no regrets, it was well worth it!

Good luck and have fun!!
