Neptune Cable, UVic - Port Alberni

General discussions about the weather, incoming storms and swell, complaining, why is it always so windy at night etc.

Neptune Cable, UVic - Port Alberni

Post by Sandy Beach »

You can follow the happenings of the ocean floor around Vancouver Island

It's the underwater cable (with the sign CABLE) that starts right at the Wild West Watersports windsurfing launch.

Now, we can observe the water/wind/waves on the Alberni inlet via the new and improved BWD weather station at Harbour Quay and watch the underwater action too around Vancouver Island area.

Amazing, the innovative technology based in Port Alberni, and in my opinion is essentially assisting to help spotlight this town in transition.

There are a bunch of videos of Neptune project posted here:

There's a neat one showing giant Humbolt Squid feeding on kitesurfers ... or maybe they are codfish ...

Thanks for posting those links, MTM. Really helps to increase awareness of the delicate balance of our ecosystem.

I'm out on the R/V Thomson right now servicing the Neptune network; live video from the ROV (when we're in the water) can be watched here:

http://www.neptunecanada.ca/news/live-video/index.dot

Its not always exciting but worth checking into now & then in case we're doing something cool.

Its pretty painful to be out here with 25-30kts solid for days at a time...

Your friendly neighbourhood ROV pilot,

Reuben

Blackdogvan (Reuben): your interesting underwater workplace (Neptune) made the top ten science stories of 2010.

Amazing technology that originates on the waterfront in Port Alberni where the Wild West Watersports windsurfing/kite access launch is.
